Rawashda Forest Field Documentation (Sudan)

Historical photographs documenting forest conditions, pastoral livelihoods, water resources, wildlife, and forestry field training activities in Rawashda Forest, eastern Sudan.

Rawashda Forest, located west of Gedaref in eastern Sudan, represents an important chapter in Professor Mustafa Suliman’s professional work in forestry, rangeland management, fuelwood development, and natural resource planning. During his work with the National Forestry Corporation and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), he contributed to one of the earliest integrated forest management initiatives implemented in the area and helped prepare one of the first Integrated Forest Management Plans for Rawashda Forest, later published by the National Forestry Corporation.

The forest subsequently became an important field training site for forestry students from Upper Nile University, where Professor Suliman served as Founder, Dean, and Professor of the Faculty of Forestry and Range Science. Students conducted month-long practical field training exercises, prepared technical reports, and documented forest conditions, natural resource use, pastoral mobility, water resources, wildlife interactions, and environmental challenges in Sudan’s arid and semi-arid lands.

The photographs presented above form part of this historical field documentation. They capture aspects of the severe drought conditions experienced during the 1980s, as well as the realities of forest management, pastoral livelihoods, water scarcity, and ecosystem resilience in eastern Sudan. Together, they provide a valuable visual record of environmental conditions and field-based natural resource management efforts during an important period in Sudan’s forestry and rangeland development history.
